Motorized Shades: Is the Upgrade Worth It? An Honest Cost-Benefit Breakdown
Blinds By Design Blog
Motorized shades have a reputation. They look like a luxury, something for big new builds and tech-forward homes. But more and more Maine homeowners are asking a practical question: is it actually worth it?
The honest answer is “it depends,” and we’d rather help you figure out which side of that you’re on than sell you something you won’t use. Here’s a straightforward look at what motorization costs, what it gives you, and who it makes sense for.
What Are Motorized Shades?
Motorized shades raise and lower with the push of a button instead of a cord or chain. Depending on the system, you can control them with:
- A handheld remote
- A wall switch
- A smartphone app
- A voice assistant
- A schedule or timer, so they move on their own
You can motorize many of our shades, including roller, cellular, Roman, and solar styles, as well as draperies. Details on options are on our motorization page. Brands in this space include Hunter Douglas (PowerView) and Lutron, among others.
The Cost Side
We won’t quote numbers here, because pricing depends heavily on the shade, window size, brand, and system. But here’s what generally goes into the cost:
- The motor itself. Motorized shades cost more than manual versions of the same shade.
- Power source. Battery-powered motors are easier to install and need periodic recharging or battery changes. Hardwired options need an electrician but avoid battery upkeep.
- Controls. Remotes and wall switches are simple. Hubs and smart-home integration add features and cost.
- Size and quantity. Larger shades need stronger motors, and the cost scales with the number of windows.
At your consultation, we’ll give you real numbers for your specific windows, so you can compare manual and motorized side by side.
The Value Side
Here’s where motorization earns its keep.
1. Hard-to-reach windows
Tall windows, stairwell windows, windows above tubs, and anything behind furniture are a hassle with cords. Motorization turns them into a button press. If you have a two-story foyer, or a wall of glass facing the water, it can be the difference between using your shades and ignoring them.
If you’re lucky enough to have a view toward Casco Bay or even a glimpse of Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, you probably want large windows and the ability to open up that view in seconds, then shield it from glare when the sun gets low.
2. Large or heavy shades
A wide window or sliding door needs a big shade, and big shades are harder to lift by hand. A motor handles the weight smoothly and evenly.
3. Energy savings through consistency
Insulating shades only help if they’re in the right position. A schedule that opens shades on sunny winter mornings for free solar heat, and closes them at sunset to hold it in, makes sure that happens every day. In summer, it can lower them before the afternoon sun heats the room.
4. Protecting your furnishings
Closing shades automatically while you’re at work or away helps shield floors, art, and furniture from UV damage.
5. Safety
Motorized shades have no dangling cords, which is a real advantage in homes with young children and pets. See our child safety services for more.
6. Accessibility and convenience
For anyone with limited mobility, arthritis, or back problems, a remote or voice command makes window coverings genuinely easier to live with.
7. A clean look
No cords, no chains, no clutter. Just smooth shades.
8. Security and lived-in appearance
Schedules can raise and lower shades while you’re traveling, so the house looks occupied.
Where It May Not Be Worth It
We’d rather be upfront about this too. Motorization may not be the right call if:
- The window is small and easy to reach, and you rarely adjust it.
- The budget is tight, and you’d have to compromise on the shade itself to afford the motor. A better shade with a cord often beats a lesser shade with a motor.
- You rent, or you plan to move soon and won’t enjoy the long-term benefit.
- You don’t want to deal with batteries or technology. Simple is a legitimate choice.
Smart-Home Compatibility
Many motorized systems can connect with popular smart-home platforms and voice assistants. Compatibility varies by brand and system, so if integration matters to you, tell us what you use at home (or plan to) and we’ll make sure the system you choose works with it.
A Practical Approach: Motorize Selectively
You don’t have to do the whole house. Many homeowners get the best value by motorizing only the windows where it matters most:
- The hardest-to-reach windows
- The biggest windows or sliding doors
- The bedroom, so shades open gently with your morning routine
- South- and west-facing windows, where scheduling helps with heat and glare
Then they use standard cord or cordless operation on the rest.
Questions to Ask Before You Decide
- How often will I actually adjust these shades?
- Are any windows hard or awkward to reach?
- Do I want a schedule, or just a remote?
- Battery or hardwired?
- What smart-home system do I use, if any?
- What’s my budget, and where will motorization deliver the most value?
Experience Matters With Motorization
Motorized shades have to be measured and installed precisely, because the motor and the shade work as a system. Phillip McKinnis, owner and operator of Blinds by Design, brings three decades of experience to the job, working alongside his son in our family-owned business. That experience helps us recommend the right system for your home, and tell you when you don’t need one.
